What Will Participants Learn?

The goal isn't to turn participants into bicycle mechanics.

It's to help them understand their bike, know what to check before riding, fix the simple things safely, and recognise when they should ask a mechanic for help.

Understand Your Bike

Learn the basic parts of a bicycle and how different bikes are designed for different types of riding.

We'll look at examples including:

Gravel / Road • Mountain Bike • E-Bike • Commuter Bikes

The M-Check

Learn a simple method for checking your bike before riding.

The M-Check helps riders systematically inspect important areas including:

Wheels • Tyres • Axles • Brakes • Cranks • Pedals • Frame • Saddle • Headset • Handlebars

The aim is simple:

Is my bike safe to ride?

Tyres & Pressure

Understand tyre sizes, widths, recommended pressures and the difference between common valve types.

Participants will also learn what tyre wear or damage to look for before riding.

Wheels & Axles

Learn how wheels attach to different bicycles, including quick-release systems and thru-axles.

We'll demonstrate how to correctly remove and reinstall a wheel and discuss basic care, positioning and tightening.

Changing a Tube

A practical demonstration covering:

Removing the wheel, identifying the correct tube size and valve, removing the tyre, checking for the cause of a puncture and installing a replacement tube.

We'll also introduce tubeless tyres and explain how riders can recognise a tubeless setup.

Chain Care

The chain is one of the most important working parts of your bike.

Learn:

How to clean it, when and how to lubricate it, how basic chain wear can be checked, and why replacing a worn chain at the right time can protect other drivetrain components.

Brake Checks

Understand the basics of:

Rim brakes • Mechanical disc brakes • Hydraulic disc brakes • Coaster brakes

We'll look at common warning signs including worn brake pads, damaged or worn rotors, poor cable tension, contamination and unusual brake lever feel.

Most importantly, participants will learn when a brake problem means:

Don't ride the bike until it's checked.

Understanding Your Drivetrain

Learn how your pedals, cranks, chainring, chain, cassette and gears work together to move the bicycle.

We'll explain common symptoms including:

Skipping gears, noisy shifting, poor gear changes and worn drivetrain components.

Essential Bike Tools

We'll finish by looking at some useful tools and equipment riders can carry on a ride or keep at home.

Including:

Multitools • Pumps • Spare tubes • Tyre levers • Basic maintenance tools

Hands-On & Beginner Friendly

This is not just a presentation.

Participants will have opportunities to inspect bikes, perform an M-Check, identify tyre and valve types, examine components and participate in basic maintenance demonstrations.

Questions are encouraged throughout the session.

Recommended group size: 8–12 participants

Workshop duration: approximately 2 hours

Who Is This Workshop For?

Bike Maintenance Basics works particularly well for:

  • Libraries and community programs
  • Local councils
  • Community houses and neighbourhood centres
  • Universities and TAFEs
  • Workplaces and employee wellbeing programs
  • Cycling and sustainability groups

The workshop is currently designed primarily for adult beginners and recreational riders.

Why Host a Bike Maintenance Workshop?

Many people already have a bicycle sitting at home.

Sometimes all that's stopping them from riding again is uncertainty:

Are the brakes okay?

Are the tyres safe?

What pressure should I use?

Why are the gears making that noise?

Can I check my child's bike before they ride?

A Bike Maintenance Basics workshop gives participants practical knowledge they can use immediately and helps make cycling feel safer and more accessible.
